Sinopec's Ningbo refiner commercialises domestic bottle-cap resin and ECMO polymer feedstock

Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Company, part of China Petrochemical Corporation, has commercialised a domestically developed food-grade polyethylene resin (ZH5050) for beverage bottle caps, ending reliance on imports, with adoption by beverage producers including Wahaha. The Ningbo refiner, which has 50 million tonnes a year of refining capacity, also achieved qualified production of 4-methyl-1-pentene (4M1P), a precursor for polymethylpentene (PMP) membranes used in medical ECMO devices, as part of a wider shift from fuel to specialty chemicals output.

Why this mattersA domestic, import-substituting food-grade resin source for bottle closures could reshape supply and pricing for Chinese beverage packaging converters and their resin buyers.

  • Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Company commercialised the ZH5050 polyethylene bottle-cap resin, replacing imported material.
  • ZH5050 has secured national food safety certification and is used by beverage producers including Wahaha.
  • The Ningbo petrochemical base has 50 million tonnes a year of aggregate refining capacity.
  • The refiner achieved qualified production of 4-methyl-1-pentene (4M1P), the key monomer for PMP membranes used in ECMO artificial-lung devices.
  • The Sinopec Ningbo New Materials Research Institute, co-founded with the Ningbo municipal government, is managed by Zhenhai Refining to speed commercialisation.
  • Industry planners expect China's refined oil demand to peak during the 15th Five-Year Plan period as electric vehicle adoption rises.
