Keurig opens US preorders for Alta brewer with compostable coffee pucks

Keurig has opened limited US preorders for Alta, a USD 499.99 single-serve brewer that replaces plastic and aluminium pods with pressed coffee pucks called AltaRounds. Keurig says each round, coating included, is certified for both home and commercial composting; the coating is plant-based and seaweed-derived. The early-access bundle runs to 15 October 2026 with shipping from 21 October, and the pucks still ship in individual plastic freshness wrappers that Keurig says it will replace with paper.

Why this mattersRemoving the pod itself from a single-serve platform would take multi-material plastic and aluminium volume out of the category if the format gains share.

  • Keurig's Alta brewer is priced at USD 499.99 and opened for limited US preorder this month.
  • AltaRounds replace plastic and aluminium single-serve pods with pressed coffee pucks bound by a plant-based, seaweed-derived coating.
  • Keurig states the rounds are certified for both home and commercial composting.
  • Preorder bundle includes the brewer, six boxes of rounds and glassware, with the offer running through 15 October and shipping starting 21 October.
  • The pucks currently ship inside individual plastic freshness wrappers, which Keurig plans to replace with paper.
  • Compostability outcomes depend on local composting access, which varies by city.

Keurig Dr Pepper to launch plastic-free AltaRounds pods and Alta brewer at end-September

Keurig Dr Pepper will unveil the Keurig Alta brewing system and AltaRounds pods at the end of September 2026, replacing the plastic and aluminium K-Cup construction with a fully compostable pressed-coffee puck in a proprietary plant-based coating. The pods will be produced at the company's Spartanburg, South Carolina complex, and the Alta brewer will initially accept both existing K-Cups and AltaRounds. Development began with internal discussions in 2020 and 2021.

Why this mattersA plastic- and aluminium-free single-serve format from the category's largest player could accelerate a shift away from mixed-material coffee capsules across the sector.

  • The Keurig Alta system and AltaRounds pods are to be unveiled at the end of September 2026.
  • AltaRounds use no plastic or metal and are fully compostable, wrapped in a proprietary plant-based coating.
  • Six Keurig-branded varieties launch initially, two espressos, a caramel option and light, medium and dark roasts, with participation from Peet's Coffee.
  • AltaRounds will be produced at Keurig's Spartanburg, South Carolina complex, having been engineered in Burlington, Massachusetts.
  • The Alta brewer is backward-compatible and will initially brew both K-Cups and AltaRounds.
  • Keurig machines are in roughly 47 million households in the US and Canada; K-Cups launched in 1998.
