ReBioCycle consortium demonstrates closed-loop recycling of PLA bioplastic
The EU-backed ReBioCycle consortium has demonstrated that PLA bioplastic can be sorted from mixed plastic waste streams and chemically broken down into lactic acid, then rebuilt into PLA with properties equivalent to virgin material. The project links sorting, chemical recycling and remanufacturing steps across the value chain, with participants including TotalEnergies Corbion. The consortium frames the result as support for PPWR recyclability requirements.
Why this mattersA working chemical-recycling loop for PLA would give brand owners a compliance route to recyclable bio-based packaging under the PPWR.
- ReBioCycle consortium demonstrated sorting of PLA from mixed plastic waste using existing technologies
- PLA is chemically depolymerised into lactic acid and repolymerised into virgin-equivalent PLA
- Kevin O'Connor is named as ReBioCycle project coordinator
- Maelenn Ravard, regulatory and sustainability manager at TotalEnergies Corbion, links the result to PPWR recyclability goals
