Sonoco to close two European plants under cost-cutting programme

Sonoco will close two unspecified European plants, finance chief Paul Joachimczyk said alongside third-quarter 2026 results on 22 October 2026, expecting savings of USD 15m-20m in 2027. The closures sit within a three-year profitability programme targeting USD 150m-200m in total savings, of which USD 34m had been achieved by end September 2026; no sites or job losses were disclosed.

Why this mattersSonoco is taking European capacity out while recovered-paper costs rise about 90% and drought-hit harvests weaken food-can demand, a squeeze European converters share.

  • Expected savings of USD 15m-20m in 2027 from the closures
  • Part of a three-year programme targeting USD 150m-200m in total savings, USD 34m achieved by end September 2026

Duni Group's third-quarter 2026 income after tax fell 71.4% to USD 3.2m (SEK 32m) from USD 11.2m (SEK 112m), although net sales rose 3.1% to USD 0.2bn (SEK 2bn). Higher logistics costs and an unfavourable product mix cut operating income, and EBIT of USD 9.4m (SEK 94m) included USD 2.1m (SEK 21m) of restructuring charges. Chief executive Robert Dackeskog said the group would focus on completing its logistics transition and on transport efficiency for the rest of the year.

Why this mattersLogistics costs and product mix are eroding margins at a European foodservice packaging supplier even as sales grow, with return on capital nearly halved.

Stora Enso has confirmed that its cross-laminated timber production unit at Gruvön, Sweden, will close permanently by the end of 2026, after completing negotiations on the shutdown it first proposed in September. About 80 positions are affected, and no redundancies will be made until personnel talks end. The company cited slower-than-expected CLT market growth, rising wood costs and high fixed production costs at the unit.

Why this mattersEurope's largest CLT producer, by its own description, is shutting a line after slower market growth and higher wood costs, a signal for other mass-timber capacity plans.

  • Closure of the Gruvön CLT unit in Sweden takes effect by end of 2026.

Transpaco annual report records regulator's block of USD 7.7m Premier Plastics deal

South African packaging group Transpaco says in its annual report that the Competition Commission prohibited its proposed purchase of retail plastic bag maker Premier Plastics for about USD 7.7m (ZAR 128m) during its financial year to end-June. Revenue for the year rose 0.7% to USD 0.14bn (ZAR 2.4bn) and operating profit rose 3.1% to USD 12.9m (ZAR 214.1m). Chair Derek Thomas said leakage in the plastic bag levy system disadvantages producers that comply.

Why this mattersThe prohibition limits consolidation by South Africa's largest retail plastic bag maker, while levy leakage leaves compliant converters competing against non-compliant ones.

  • Competition Commission prohibited Transpaco's proposed purchase of Premier Plastics for about USD 7.7m (ZAR 128m)
  • Premier Plastics is a retail plastic bag manufacturer

  • Cruz Foam developed a compostable foam material as an alternative to petroleum-based plastic packaging foam
  • The company had raised USD 18m in a Series A round, with investors including Leonardo DiCaprio and Ashton Kutcher
  • The failure is attributed to an inability to meet customer expectations on performance, reliability and cost

Auto Care Association seeks to join suit against Colorado packaging EPR law

The Auto Care Association filed a motion on 15 October 2026 to join as plaintiff in National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors v. Ryan, the federal suit challenging Colorado's packaging extended producer responsibility law. The association objects to automotive and petroleum producers having to report and pay fees to both Circular Action Alliance and the Lubricants Packaging Management Association (LPMA) for the same products. Member AutoZone has paid more than USD 575,000 to the two organisations, and LPMA plans to move to a materials-based fee schedule on 1 January 2027 that the complaint says could raise some rates by over 300%.

Why this mattersA second producer-responsibility organisation operating alongside Circular Action Alliance raises compliance cost and complexity that other states weighing EPR design may need to address.

  • Auto Care Association filed its motion on 15 October 2026 in the US District Court for the District of Colorado.
  • CDPHE approved LPMA's individual program plan, operating as Interchange 360, on 9 September 2025.
  • O'Reilly has been invoiced more than USD 350,000 by CAA and expects LPMA fees above USD 500,000.
  • AutoZone has paid more than USD 575,000 across both organisations, including over USD 415,000 to LPMA, plus about USD 390,000 in consultant and software costs.
  • LPMA currently charges a flat 56 cents per gallon and plans a materials-based schedule from 84 cents to USD 1.88 per gallon starting 1 January 2027.
  • The Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association separately sued over the LPMA plan in Colorado state court in March 2026.

Argentine Senate bill proposes extended producer responsibility for packaging

A bill introduced in the Argentine Senate by Senator Edith Terenzi would create a national extended producer responsibility regime for domestic and imported packaging. Companies first placing packaged products on the Argentine market would have to organise and fund recovery and recycling through collective management systems or deposit-return schemes. Fines would range from 100 to 1,000 times a public-sector minimum salary, up to about ARS 577m. The bill has not been passed.

Why this mattersA national EPR law would make Argentine packaging producers and importers fund collection and recycling, adding cost and reporting duties for brand owners.

  • Senator Edith Terenzi's bill revives a proposal first filed in the Chamber of Deputies by former deputy Carlos González D'Alessandro
  • Scope covers packaging made in Argentina and imported, plus disposable trays, plates and cups used to sell food and drink; export packaging is excluded
  • Two compliance routes: non-profit producer consortia (Integrated Management Systems) and deposit, return and refund systems
  • Article 24 sets fines of 100 to 1,000 minimum salaries of the national public administration's basic entry grade
  • Argentina generates about 16.5 million tonnes of waste a year, and 34.4% is handled through open dumps or controlled landfills, the bill states

The same order adds other Canadian products, including sweetened cocoa powder, certain carpets and valves, while the broader 50% measure on Canadian goods stays in place.

Freiburg narrows packaging tax to disposable cups from 2027

Freiburg City Council in Germany has approved a narrower version of its packaging tax, restricting it from 1 January 2027 to disposable cups used for drinks and ice cream, at EUR 0.50 per cup. The move scales back the broader packaging tax introduced at the start of 2026, while retaining a financial incentive for reusable cup systems.

Why this mattersDropping other takeaway packaging from the tax leaves single-use cups as the only taxed item, keeping a price signal in favour of reusable cup systems.

  • Freiburg City Council approved the narrower tax scope in a recent decision.
  • The tax applies only to disposable cups for drinks and ice cream from 1 January 2027.
  • The rate is EUR 0.50 per cup.
