COMY launches pilot plant converting plastic waste into recycled propylene
Zhejiang COMY Environmental Technology started a pilot plant on 16 October 2026 in Cangzhou, Hebei Province, China, applying its patented Plastic-to-Propylene chemical recycling technology to mixed plastic waste. The facility, at the Yanzhao Green Chemistry Laboratory, tests a distributed-plus-central ('N+1') process model and is intended as a step toward commercial-scale deployment.
Why this mattersA working chemical-recycling route to high-purity propylene could supply recycled feedstock for polypropylene packaging as recycled-content mandates such as PPWR tighten from 2030.
- Pilot plant launched 16 October 2026 in Cangzhou, Hebei Province, China.
- Technology uses selective catalytic cracking and olefin recombination to convert mixed, contaminated plastic waste into high-purity propylene.
- Process avoids intensive washing required by mechanical recycling.
- N+1 model pairs distributed pre-treatment plants (pyrolysis to intermediate oils) with a central processing plant producing propylene.
- COMY plans to verify commercial-scale performance before expanding capacity and the model to other markets.
- EU PPWR sets minimum recycled-content requirements for plastic packaging from 2030; UK plastic packaging tax applies below 30% recycled content, with mass-balance chemical recycling allowed from April 2027.
