EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation takes effect, PFAS curbs begin
The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) became applicable across the bloc on 12 August 2026, replacing national packaging rules with a single EU framework and immediately banning PFAS above set thresholds in food-contact packaging such as takeaway containers, bakery paper and pizza boxes. On 21 August 2026 the European Commission clarified that the compliance trigger for existing stock is the date packaging is placed on the EU market rather than its manufacturing date, so stock already transferred to independent retailers before 12 August is generally exempt while stock still held by manufacturers or logistics providers is not automatically covered. Further PPWR phases follow, including harmonised waste-sorting labels from 2028 and, from 2030, empty-space limits, single-use plastic restrictions, reuse targets and mandatory recycled-content thresholds for plastic packaging.
