Holmen runs rebuilt Braviken PM52 as swing machine for graphic paper and containerboard

Holmen has rebuilt paper machine PM52 at its Braviken mill in Sweden so it can switch between graphic papers and lightweight containerboard made from thermomechanical pulp. The SEK 450m (USD 45.4m) project, announced in 2023 and completed in 2024, used technology from Andritz and underpins Holmen's new Elevate kraftliner and fluting range starting at 72 g/m2.

Why this mattersShows an established paper producer repurposing existing graphic-paper assets into flexible containerboard capacity as demand shifts, without new-build capital.

• Andritz says the mechanical-pulp-based containerboard can cut grammage by up to 20% versus conventional grades
