NEXTLOOPP consortium trials food-grade recycled PP in BOPP film

The NEXTLOOPP consortium, with Turkish film producer Süper Film and Brückner Maschinenbau, has completed pilot-line trials processing food-grade recycled polypropylene into biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film under standard commercial conditions. The trial reached 20 percent recycled content in a five-layer coextruded film without film breaks, using feedstock from Mexican recycler Alcamare. The consortium's next step is a trial at full commercial production speed on a Süper Film production line.

Why this mattersBOPP has had no food-grade recycling route until now, giving converters and brand owners a path to meet EU PPWR recycled-content mandates.

  • Trial achieved 20% total recycled content in a five-layer coextruded BOPP film of around 25 microns
  • The pilot line ran with no film breaks and only minor adjustment to standard process parameters
  • Tensile strength was about 10% lower than a 100% virgin reference roll but remained within specification
  • Feedstock was food-grade recycled PP from Mexican recycler Alcamare, sourced from a single, tightly controlled stream
  • Trials were run on Brückner Maschinenbau's BAL pilot line after laboratory extrusion and KARO stretcher tests
  • Next step is a trial at full commercial BOPP production speed on a Süper Film production line

Brückner Maschinenbau adds Secomea remote-access technology

Brückner Maschinenbau has agreed a technology partnership with Denmark's Secomea to build secure remote access into its film-line machinery. The tie-up is intended to speed up remote maintenance and support while strengthening cybersecurity protection across Brückner's installed equipment base.

Why this mattersSecure remote access can cut service downtime for film-line customers and addresses growing cybersecurity exposure in connected industrial equipment.

  • Brückner Maschinenbau has partnered with Secomea to integrate secure remote access into its machinery.
  • The partnership is aimed at improving remote maintenance and support capability.
  • The collaboration is intended to strengthen cybersecurity protection for Brückner's installed equipment base.

PolyCycle PCR resin qualified on PackSys Global tube equipment

PolyCycle Innovation and PackSys Global announced that PolyCycle's certified food-grade PCR HDPE resin has passed qualification testing on PackSys Global's compression moulding tube equipment, including the noSho tube design. The qualification gives cosmetics, personal care and oral care tube manufacturers a validated PCR HDPE option to meet California's SB 54 extended producer responsibility rules, which took effect in May 2026 with full enforcement from 1 January 2027.

Why this mattersA validated PCR resin-and-equipment pairing lowers the technical barrier for squeeze-tube makers to hit US state recycled-content mandates without retooling.

  • PolyCycle's PCR HDPE resin has been tested and approved on PackSys Global's compression moulding equipment for both noSho and traditional tubes.
  • California SB 54 took effect in May 2026, with full EPR enforcement from 1 January 2027.
  • New Jersey is preparing its own recycled-packaging-content law.
  • PackSys Global demonstrated a noSho tube with over 50% PCR content at Paris Packaging Week in February 2026.
  • PolyCycle sources PCR resin through a 100% North American supply chain and holds FDA NOL and GreenCircle certification.
  • PackSys Global is a business unit of Germany's Brückner Group, serving customers in more than 90 countries.
  • PolyCycle Innovation and PackSys Global say they will continue joint development beyond the initial qualification.

Toppan starts new BOPP film line at Italian unit Irplast

Toppan Holdings' Italian film subsidiary Irplast has inaugurated a new manufacturing line for biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film, marking the event with a ceremony on 15 September 2026. The line lifts the plant's high-performance BOPP capacity to up to 30,000 tonnes a year and is expected to reach full commercial operation by late 2026, targeting recyclable mono-material packaging demand in Europe.

Why this mattersAdds local European capacity for mono-material BOPP film as converters and brand owners seek PPWR-compliant recyclable substrates.

  • New BOPP film line inaugurated at Irplast, Italy, on 15 September 2026
  • Combined line capacity reaches up to 30,000 tonnes per year of high-performance BOPP film
  • Full commercial operations expected by late 2026
  • Line uses Bruckner's LISIM simultaneous stretching technology
  • Development targets down-gauging and retort-sterilisation-resistant applications
  • Films aimed at recycle-ready mono-material packaging for EU PPWR compliance
  • Output is aimed at packaging converters and global brand owners
  • The line supports development of Toppan's GL BARRIER transparent film substrates
  • Future development on the Irplast BOPP line will focus on downgauging to reduce plastic use while maintaining film strength.
  • Toppan and its India subsidiary Toppan Specialty Films installed a hybrid BOPP/BOPE line in India in 2025
  • Investment in the new Irplast line valued at approximately EUR 100m (USD 114m)
  • Announcement made at an institutional summit in San Salvo, Abruzzo, between the region and Japanese industrial groups
  • Partnership also involves Honda and Denso and was developed ahead of Expo Osaka
