L'Oréal and Avolta set 10% refill target for travel retail fragrance by 2030

L'Oréal Travel Retail and Avolta agreed a joint sustainability plan at the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes, targeting 10% refillable formats in core fragrance categories by 2030. The plan also covers lower supply-chain emissions through more efficient transport modes and optimised truckload capacity, and CSR training for beauty advisers. No investment figure or volume was disclosed.

Why this mattersA major brand owner and a leading travel retailer committing jointly to refill targets signals demand-side pressure on fragrance packaging suppliers to develop reusable formats.

  • Target is 10% refill formats across core fragrance categories by 2030.
  • The plan was agreed in early October 2026 at the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes.
  • Measures to cut supply-chain emissions cover more efficient transport modes and optimised truckload capacity.
  • Beauty advisers will receive dedicated CSR training modules under the agreement.

L'Oréal and Estée Lauder redesign packaging ahead of EU and California EPR rules

L'Oréal expects to save roughly USD 1m a year in extended producer responsibility fees by removing metal decals from one Garnier shampoo once California's SB 54 packaging law takes effect in 2028. Estée Lauder has spent about two and a half years developing a recyclable paper sachet to replace multi-layer laminate samples, as both companies adjust packaging ahead of the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, due later this year, and California's producer-responsibility programme.

Why this mattersShows brand owners quantifying EPR cost savings from material changes, a signal that PPWR and SB 54 are starting to drive concrete packaging redesign decisions at scale.

  • L'Oréal projects about USD 1m in annual EPR fee savings by removing metal decals from one Garnier shampoo once California's SB 54 takes effect in 2028.
  • The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation takes effect later in 2026; California's Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act takes effect in 2028.
  • Estée Lauder spent about two and a half years developing a globally recyclable paper sachet to replace its multi-layer laminate sample packets.
  • Estée Lauder has run an EPR compliance algorithm for 20 years, originally built with recycler Strategic Materials to validate glass recovery from small fragrance bottles.
  • L'Oréal has joined a Closed Loop Partners coalition, alongside Kraft Heinz, Target and P&G, to retrofit material recovery facilities for small-format rigid plastics.

L'Oreal names Bormioli Luigi to second L'AcceleratOR cohort

L'Oreal has selected 13 companies from eight countries for the second cohort of its L'AcceleratOR sustainability programme, backed by EUR 100m to fund pilots on climate, nature and circularity. Bormioli Luigi joins the Next-Generation Packaging & Materials category for its ultralight, resistant glass packaging. Cohort members undergo an acceleration phase led by the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership before running six- to nine-month pilots with L'Oreal, with scope to scale successful projects across its global operations.

Why this mattersAccess to L'Oreal's pilot programme gives Bormioli Luigi a potential route to scale lightweight glass packaging with a major cosmetics brand owner.

  • L'Oreal named 13 companies from eight countries to the second cohort of its L'AcceleratOR programme on 18 September 2026.
  • The programme is endowed with EUR 100m to fund pilots on climate, nature and circularity.
  • Bormioli Luigi was selected in the Next-Generation Packaging & Materials category for ultralight, resistant glass packaging.
  • The cohort enters an acceleration phase led by the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership focused on pilot readiness.
  • Selected companies can run six- to nine-month pilot projects with L'Oreal and potentially scale solutions across its international operations.
  • Other packaging and materials entrants in the cohort include France's Auressens, UK-based Arda Biomaterials and US-based Newlight Technologies.
  • The wider cohort also covers ingredients, formulation and industrial processes companies such as Germany's Bioweg and India's Without.

Nanu takes coated pulp mould packaging into electronics and cosmetics

South Korean startup Nanu expects revenue to roughly double to about KRW 1.3bn (USD 970,000) in 2026 from KRW 600m (USD 450,000) in 2025, driven by a proprietary water-based coating that makes pulp mold containers resistant to water, oil and heat. The coating lets paper packaging replace single-use plastic beyond food, with Nanu co-developing phone packaging and semiconductor trays with Samsung Electronics and cosmetics containers with Amorepacific and LOreal. The company received separable-disposal labelling approval for its coated paper in March 2026 and is seeking licensing production in Vietnam to cut unit costs, while also targeting commercialisation of a citrus-peel and brewer grain byproduct material, Deco Mold, by year-end 2026.

Why this mattersA coatings specialist extending pulp mould into semiconductor trays and cosmetics containers widens the categories where paper can displace plastic beyond food service.

  • Nanu projects revenue to roughly double to about KRW 1.3bn (USD 970,000) in 2026 from KRW 600m (USD 450,000) in 2025
  • Nanu's water-based coating on pulp mold containers blocks water and oil absorption and adds heat resistance
  • Nanu received separable-disposal labelling approval for its coated paper products in March 2026
  • Nanu is co-developing pulp mold phone packaging with Samsung Electronics and plans to extend the work to semiconductor trays
  • Nanu is developing paper containers that hold cosmetic contents directly with Amorepacific and L'Oreal
  • Coated pulp molds cost more than twice as much as ordinary plastic containers, prompting licensing plans for production in Vietnam
